I live in Cozumel. The reefs here are some of the best diving on the planet, but the maps and materials about them never seemed to get the same care: sparse and outdated. This map is my way of giving something back to the island's diving community, even if it is just a map. I hope it genuinely helps you research and plan your dives here.

How the map is organized

Almost all Cozumel diving happens along one strip: the sheltered west coast, where the current runs south to north and the reef sits in a band offshore. The map follows that strip from the bottom of the island to the top, in five sectors.

  • Punta Sur & deep southThe wildest terrain and the strongest current, including Devil's Throat and the Cathedral. Maracaibo is the far-south wall, a long boat ride for divers who have earned it.
  • PalancarThe four faces of the postcard reef: Gardens, Caves, Horseshoe, Bricks, plus La Francesa and Dalila.
  • The mid coastThe great walls, Santa Rosa and San Francisco, and the fast flat drifts at Paso del Cedral, Yucab and Tormentos.
  • Chankanaab & townThe shallow, gentle end: shore entries, night dives, training reefs, and the C-53 wreck.
  • The northRarely dived, weather dependent, and worth it. Cantarell gathers eagle rays between December and March.

At island scale the map shows the flagship sites plus a numbered circle wherever sites crowd together. Zoom a sector and every site inside it appears, labelled. The map tells you where a site is; for what each one is like to dive, see the full dive-site guide.

How often is the map updated?

Statuses are re-checked against the marine park's reef-rest calendar twice a month, and the date below is the last check. When a reef rotates closed or reopens, the map changes with it.

Can you use this map? Yes.

Use it. Print it, put it on the wall of your shop, post it in a forum thread, hand it to a customer. The only conditions are that you do not sell it, and that you credit dripdive with a link back to this page.
